Background

I have been an accredited Protective Behaviours (PBs) trainer since 2001. I am a qualified nurse, health visitor and lecturer with an MA by research in applied social studies having researched preventive approaches in schools.

I set up and managed the Protective Behaviours based Taking Care Scheme from 1999 when it began as a multi-agency LSCB promoted way of helping schools develop their approach to safeguarding through the curriculum. That work continues through my freelance role now. In Warwickshire 99% of primary schools use Protective Behaviours in their daily work as well as delivering a PBs curriculum to all the children every year. There are a growing number of nursery and secondary settings embedding PBs in their work and that development is ongoing.

As well as training hundreds of education professionals in Protective Behaviours every year, I have for many years also trained professionals across the children and families work force (police, health, social care, drug and alcohol support services, third sector, counselling and more)in PBs. I deliver Protective Behaviours training to over 1000 professionals every year and am unerringly determined that PBs can assist everyone in creating safer environments for all.

Since 2003 I have designed and delivered safeguarding training for education designated safeguarding leads, from Early Years to FE, and have supported schools with safeguarding queries and concerns. I worked for Warwickshire County Council Education Safeguarding Service from 2003 – 2020.

I have an unwavering belief that all children have the right to be educated and looked after in environments which are an oasis of safety, care and kindness where staff are committed and motivated to safeguard everyone emotionally and physically, all day, every day, regardless of their age, stage of development and behaviour.

All my work helps to support staff to do the best they can for all children and young people, while understanding they too have the right to feel safe and to ask for help when they need it.
